What works cheaper and more precisely than a Chinese peasant? Sophisticated robots!
I’ve argued before, and I will continue to argue, that China’s “advantage” in low-cost labor is not going to last – American technological sophistication continues to improve on a daily basis, and the set of things that must be built by humans diminishes correspondingly. It won’t happen all at once, of course, but you’ll see more and more companies like Marlin over time – a few highly skilled employees and a shop-floor chock full of robots, doing the manual labor for pennies an hour.
